Waste Management & Remediation Division | State Superfund | Burlington Northern Livingston Shop Complex & Mission Wye | June 8, 2023
The Burlington Northern Livingston Shop Complex Facility includes an active rail yard used for repair and maintenance that is currently operated by Montana Rail Link (MRL), and the surrounding area where contaminants have come to be located. Previous rail yard operations resulted in soil and groundwater contamination, including chlorinated solvents, petroleum, lead, asbestos, and other compounds released to the environment. In September 2001, DEQ issued the Record of Decision (ROD) for the Facility, which requires cleanup actions and additional investigations. BNSF Railway (BNSF) continues to investigate contamination and conduct cleanup. The Mission Wye Facility is located five miles to the east of Livingston, MT and was an industrial landfill that received waste from the Burlington Northern Livingston Shop Complex Facility (BN Livingston). DEQ issued the ROD for Mission Wye in March 2020 and the selected remedy for final cleanup includes monitored natural attenuation (MNA) for groundwater contamination and institutional controls (ICs). BNSF continues to implement the selected remedy through annual groundwater monitoring and IC inspections.
