Wildfire smoke from Oregon continues to pour into Montana. Oregon wildfires will remain the biggest contributor to Montana’s smoky skies in the coming days.
There are a handful of wildfires burning across Montana. Unseasonably warm temperatures and low humidity allowed some of these to expand quickly over the last 24-hours. The Elder 1 Fire just west of Frenchtown grew on Monday. It has now burned 510 acres and is 0% contained. Per satellite imagery, the most active wildfire in the state on Monday was the Silvertip Fire, burning east of Flathead Lake in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. It has now burned 394 acres.
At 9:00 AM Tuesday, particulate levels in Billings, Hamilton and Helena are Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. Particulate levels in Butte, Columbia Falls, Cut Bank, Dillon, Frenchtown, Great Falls, Havre, Lewistown, Libby, Malta, Missoula, Sleeping Giant and Thompson Falls are Moderate.
By Wednesday afternoon, the Rapid Refresh Forecast System (RRFS) smoke model shows light to moderate smoke covering much of the western half of the state from domestic and regional wildfires.

Forecast
Unseasonably warm temperatures, low humidity, and gusty afternoon winds will lead to additional growth on regional wildfires on Tuesday. 1.5 million acres have already burned across Washington and Oregon. It is these wildfires that are primarily responsible for Montana’s smoky skies of late.
Isolated thunderstorms will be possible each evening through Thursday. These storms will contain little to no precipitation, gusty winds, and lightning. Dense smoke reduces instability, so areas with less smoke are more likely to see these storms. These dry thunderstorms have the potential to spark additional wildfires.
Starting Friday, the ridge of high pressure begins to shift east. This will produce critical fire weather thanks to unusually warm air, low humidity, and gusty westerly winds. Record warmth is possible by Saturday afternoon with 100+ degree heat possible for some areas. More seasonable temperatures are expected by Sunday and Monday with highs back in the 80s. Unfortunately, there is no widespread precipitation in the forecast throughout the next week or so. Smoky skies will remain a nearly constant theme into the first week of August. Stay tuned!
Conditions can change quickly as weather could stimulate active fires and the likelihood of new starts increases. Please keep track of concentrations at todaysair.mtdeq.us or the Fire and Smoke Map.
Smoke from regional wildfires is creating smoky skies early Tuesday morning across much of Montana.
