Smoke Forecast for Tuesday, July 9, 2024 8:00 AM
Current Conditions
Wildfires in the Northwest, namely Washington have experienced growth over the last week. The smoke from these fires made its way into Northern Idaho and Northwestern Montana over the weekend impacting the areas around the Bitterroot, Libby, and towards the Flathead Valley. Air quality will gradually improve today over Northwestern Montana as surface winds have begun to shift. However, some mild transport smoke may return on Wednesday as the winds shift once again.
The Northwest fires have caused Libby, Thompson Falls, and Frenchtown monitors to fall in the moderate category.
Forecast
Winds have begun to shift across Montana carrying transport smoke out of state. This will continue to push smoke from Washington wildfires West. High temperature, low relative humidity, light winds, and instability all contribute to potential fire development.
Conditions can change quickly as weather could stimulate active fires and the likelihood of new starts increases. Please keep track of concentrations at todaysair.mtdeq.us or the Fire and Smoke Map.
