Smoke Forecast for Monday, June 9, 2025 9:45 AM

  • June 09 2025

Current Conditions

Canadian wildfire smoke remains widespread across the state early Monday, particularly east of I-15. Unseasonably warm air over the Northern Rockies will lead to active wildfire behavior and increased smoke production. However, surface smoke over the Treasure State is not as dense is it was 24-hours ago thanks to a westerly flow.

At 9:00 AM Monday, Columbia Falls, Libby, Frenchtown, Choteau, Sleeping Giant, Helena, Butte, Bozeman, Great Falls, Lewistown, Havre, Sidney, Glendive, Miles City, and Broadus’ air quality are Moderate.

A cool front on Tuesday will drag additional surface smoke into the northern half of the state.

Forecast

High pressure will produce unseasonably warm air across the state on Monday. It will also result in active fire behavior and increased smoke production on the existing fires burning across British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. A westerly flow on Monday should gradually push much of the smoke out of the region, leading to improved visibility and air quality. A cold front sags south into the state starting Tuesday morning. It will be accompanied by additional wildfire smoke sinking south out of Canada. Smoke models indicate that the bulk of the smoke will affect the northern half of the state. The surface smoke likely won’t linger too long. An active weather pattern and a southwesterly flow should keep much of the Canadian wildfire smoke out of the state starting Wednesday.

Conditions can change quickly as weather could stimulate active fires and the likelihood of new starts increases. Please keep track of concentrations at todaysair.mtdeq.us or the Fire and Smoke Map.

Surface smoke remains visible early Monday, particularly across the eastern half of the state.
