Smoke Forecast for Monday, May 13, 2024 8:30 AM

  • May 13 2024

Current Conditions

Wildfires across British Columbia and Alberta have experienced dramatic growth over the past week. Many of these fires are overwintering blazes that reignited due to dry and unseasonably warm conditions. Air quality has gradually improved over northern and eastern Montana as surface winds have begun to shift. Over the weekend, northerly winds brought smoke from these fires south into parts of Montana.

The HRRR smoke model shows most of the Canadian wildfire smoke pushing out of Montana by early Tuesday.

At 8:00 AM Monday, Malta's air quality is Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. Great Falls, Sidney, Glendive, and Miles City are Moderate.

 Forecast

Winds have begun to shift across Montana from the north to the west and south. This will continue to push the remaining smoke from Canadian wildfires out of the state.

Conditions can change quickly as weather could stimulate active fires and the likelihood of new starts increases. Please keep track of concentrations at todaysair.mtdeq.us or the Fire and Smoke Map.

Some smoke is still visible early Monday across Northeast Montana.

Summary

Air quality will continue to gradually improve across Montana thanks to a shift in wind direction. North winds have shifted to the west and south, and that should continue to send smoke from Canadian wildfires out of Montana.
