Smoke Forecast for Wednesday, October 9, 2024 9:30 AM
Current Conditions
A cool front will march across Montana on Wednesday. It will provide some temporary relief from the relatively high surface smoke concentrations.
There are numerous active wildfires still burning in the Central Idaho mountains. This combined with a couple of wildfires in Montana will keep smoke and haze around the Treasure State. The Daly fire burning east of Hamilton in the Sapphire Mountains has grown over 8,000 acres. The fire is 56% contained and it is the largest staffed wildfire in Montana, with 175 people working on it.
At 9:00 AM Wednesday, Libby, Lewistown Columbia Falls, Great Falls, Butte Sleeping Giant, Helena, Hamilton, Bozeman, Billings, Miles City, Sidney, Malta were enduring Moderate air quality. Broadus was experiencing air that is Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.
Wednesday morning’s satellite shows widespread smoke over Montana from wildfires burning around the region.

Forecast
A weak system will help to temporarily flatten the ridge of high pressure over the Northern Rockies on Wednesday. Wind gusts could exceed 30 miles per hour at times. Good news: This feature will generate quite a bit of wind that will temporarily scour out much of the surface smoke over Western Montana valleys. Bad news: The system’s winds will likely lead to additional fire growth on Montana and Idaho’s wildfires.
The ridge will build back over the Northern Rockies starting Thursday and continuing into the weekend. This will provide unseasonably warm temperatures, with highs as much as 10-15 degrees above average. The combination of warm air, dry fuels, and gusty afternoon breezes will allow existing wildfires to expand. Expect surface smoke concentrations to gradually increase under this pattern, with the usual diurnal patterns of smoke pooling and draining into the valleys after sunset.
There are some indications that a trough late next week will provide some relief in the form of rain. However, until the region receives a good soaking, wildfires will remain active and smoke will negatively impact air quality values around the Treasure State. Stay tuned!
By midday Thursday, the HRRR smoke model shows lower levels of surface smoke around the state behind a weak system.

Conditions can change quickly as weather could stimulate active fires and the likelihood of new starts increases. Please keep track of concentrations at todaysair.mtdeq.us or the Fire and Smoke Map.
