Smoke Forecast for Tuesday, October 8, 2024 9:30 AM

  • October 08 2024

Current Conditions

A ridge will remain in place, maintaining unseasonably warm temperatures and allowing regional wildfires to expand. The southern half of Montana will continue to see surface smoke impacts as a result.

At 9:00 AM Tuesday, Libby, Columbia Falls, Great Falls, Frenchtown, Missoula, Lewistown, Hamilton, Butte, Bozeman, Billings, West Yellowstone, Glasgow, Sidney, Miles City, and Broadus were enduring Moderate air quality.

Tuesday morning’s satellite shows widespread smoke across much of the southern half of the state from regional wildfires.

Forecast

High pressure will flatten on Tuesday, allowing afternoon wind gusts to exceed 30 miles per hour in many valleys. The gusty conditions will likely create active fire conditions on the numerous blazes burning in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. A southwesterly flow will pump smoke from these fires into the Treasure State, particularly the southwest portion of the state.

Anomalously warm air will linger over the Northern Rockies for the next several days as a sprawling area of high pressure dominates the weather story. Expect the usual diurnal fluctuations in surface smoke with this pattern. As inversions break up around midday, breezy conditions will help scour out surface smoke as air quality improves. Around sunset, winds will weaken, and smoke will gradually pool and drain into valleys around the state.

By the end of the week, a disturbance splits sending most of the precipitation north and south of Montana. A scattered shower or two is possible by Friday night, but unfortunately Montana will miss out on widespread soaking rains. The storm will help to produce gusty afternoon winds Friday and into the weekend. Temperatures will remain unseasonably warm with afternoon highs in the 70s and 80s.

By midday Wednesday, the HRRR smoke model shows high surface smoke concentrations over much of the state.

Conditions can change quickly as weather could stimulate active fires and the likelihood of new starts increases. Please keep track of concentrations at todaysair.mtdeq.us or the Fire and Smoke Map.
