Waste Management Bureau | Lincoln County Landfill Expansion Draft Environmental Assessment | Libby, MT | Comment Period Ends November 15, 2024

  • October 16 2024

To comply with the Montana Environmental Policy Act, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) prepared a draft environmental assessment (Draft EA) regarding the proposed southwestward expansion of the Lincoln County Landfill in Libby, Montana.

The proposal includes approximately 17.4 acres of property located southeast of the currently operating Lincoln County Landfill at 2501 Pipe Creek Road. A drive would be used to access the site from the main entrance off Pipe Creek Road via Libby Landfill Road. Of the 17.4 acres, only 14.3 acres are planned for active landfilling activities. The remaining acreage will remain as is during the 29 years of active landfilling in this area.

The existing landfill is expected to reach capacity in 2027. This expansion would allow for the continued acceptance of Group II, Group III, and Group IV waste, alleviating the need for this waste to be transported to outside of the county for final disposal.
