Waste Management Bureau | Flathead County Landfill Expansion Final Environmental Assessment | Kalispell, MT | Public Notice
To comply with the Montana Environmental Policy Act, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) prepared a final environmental assessment (Final EA) regarding the southern expansion of the Flathead County Landfill in Kalispell, MT.
The proposal includes approximately 121 acres of property located south of the currently operating Flathead County Landfill which is located on US Highway 93 north of Kalispell. The current site access via Disposal Rd will be utilized for the proposed expansion.
This expansion would allow for the continued acceptance of Group II, Group III, and Group IV waste, alleviating the need for this waste to be transported to outside of the county for final disposal. The lifespan of the proposed expansion will be 81 years.
The comment period on the original Draft EA started May 16, 2025. The public comment period ended on June 15, 2025. During the comment period, DEQ received 11 submissions with comments covering several topics from the Draft EA and proposed action. DEQ read, summarized, combined, and considered the substantive elements from the comments. All responses can be found in Section 9 of the Final EA.
The proposed action is approved.
