The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has made a final decision approving reissuance of the hazardous waste permit for the CHS Inc. Laurel Refinery (CHS) located in Laurel, Montana. The final permit number is MTHWP-25-01.

CHS has had a hazardous waste permit in effect since 1991. The final permit will contain requirements for the post-closure care of a closed Land Treatment Unit and implementation of facility-wide corrective action.

The public, including interested citizens, DEQ, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), other government agencies, and the applicant were able to review and comment on the draft environmental assessment and proposed action. The comment period extended from June 15, 2025, through July 31, 2025. One comment regarding a permit condition was received from the applicant. DEQ clarified the condition in the permit as requested by the applicant.
