MEPA | Stillwater Mine Amendment 014 EIS | Absarokee, MT | Comment Period Ends July, 17, 2026 | Open House July, 7, 2026
The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Custer Gallatin National Forest (CGNF) are commencing the Notice of Intent and 30-day public scoping period for a joint Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to analyze the potential impacts of a proposed major amendment (Amendment 014) to state Operating Permit 00118 and the federal Stillwater Mine Plan of Operations. If approved, Amendment 014 infrastructure improvements (proposed action) would provide the waste storage capacity necessary to extend the mine’s operational life up to 42 years.
DEQ and CGNF are seeking substantive public input for 30 days. A substantive comment is relevant, fact-based, and specific and may offer insight, analysis, or constructive feedback on the proposed action.
