The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is proposing to issue new authorization under the 2023 Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) General Permit (GP) for a large CAFO with maximum daily animal confinement of 220 Mature Dairy Cows, 40 Veal Calves, 300 Cattle, 6,000 Swine, and 12,500 Chickens to Fairhaven Colony.  

The MPDES CAFO General Permit MTG010000 regulates the manure, litter, and process wastewater generated by CAFOs to ensure that CAFO activities do not harm water quality.  

The facility’s NOI-NMP package is being made available for a 30-day public review and comment period. During the public comment period, any interested person may submit written comments and may request a public hearing. A request for a public hearing must be in writing and must state the nature of the issues proposed to be raised in the hearing. DEQ will respond to any significant comments received during the comment period, and if necessary, require the CAFO owner or operator to review the NMP.
