Waste Management Bureau | Deer Lodge Landfill Expansion Draft Environmental Assessment | Deer Lodge, MT | Comment Period Ends March 15, 2025

  • February 12 2025

To comply with the Montana Environmental Policy Act, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) prepared a draft environmental assessment (Draft EA) regarding the proposed southeastward expansion of the Deer Lodge Landfill in Deer Lodge, Montana.

The proposal includes approximately 110 acres of property located southeast of the currently operating Deer Lodge Landfill which sits south of Boulder Road approximately two miles southeast of the city of Deer Lodge. A drive would be used to access the site from Boulder Road. Of the 110 acres, only 25.6 acres are planned for active landfilling activities.

This expansion would allow for the continued acceptance of Group II, Group III, and Group IV waste, alleviating the need for this waste to be transported to outside of the county for final disposal.

The purpose of the Draft EA is to inform the public of the proposed action and to seek participation in the decision-making process.
