Back to Nature: A Story of Ongoing Reclamation at Troy Mine
The Troy Mine in northwestern Montana operated between 1981 and 1993 and again from 2004-2015.
The Troy Mine in northwestern Montana operated between 1981 and 1993 and again from 2004-2015. In 2015, the large underground copper-silver mine was acquired by Hecla Mining, Inc., and shortly thereafter the company decided not to resume operations. DEQ and the U.S. Forest Service work with Hecla Mining, Inc. to oversee and regularly monitor reclamation efforts to return the land to beneficial use. Past reclamation efforts at the Troy Mine included revegetating the tailings (mine waste) storage facility, demolishing the mill site, and developing a long-term water management strategy. Mine closure efforts continue to ensure reclamation is fulfilled, as required by state law.
