DEQ Accepting Public Comment on CR Kendall Draft EIS

Helena – The Montana Department of Environmental Quality is accepting public comments on an application by CR Kendall Corp. to amend the operating permit for its Kendall Mine.

The CR Kendall Mine is an open pit mine in closure status located on the eastern flanks of the North Moccasin Mountains in Fergus County.

The department has issued a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (Draft EIS) for the proposed amendment that includes an amended closure plan for the final design of water management and treatment, final capping and reseeding of the former process pads, and long-term reclamation monitoring and maintenance. The Draft EIS is available electronically on the DEQ website:

DEQ is holding a public meeting to accept comment from the public on the Draft EIS. It will be held on Wednesday, September 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Yogo Inn, 211 E Main St. in Lewistown.

The environmental impact statement includes an analysis of a No Action Alternative, a Proposed Action (the company’s proposed amendment), the Process Pad Drainage Pretreatment Alternative, and the Process Pad Barrier Cover Alternative for the Draft EIS. DEQ has identified the Proposed Action as modified by the Process Pad Drainage Pretreatment Alternative as the preferred alternative.

The Draft EIS is not a final decision. The preferred alternative could change in response to public comment on the Draft EIS, new information, or new analysis that might be needed in preparing the Final EIS.

Comments on the Draft EIS may be submitted at the public meeting or electronically using the DEQ Public Comment Portal at:  Written comments may also be mailed to Jen Lane, Department of Environmental Quality, P.O. Box 200901, Helena, MT 59601 or emailed to:  Questions about the environmental review may be directed to Ms. Lane at 406-444-4956. The deadline for comments is Friday October 9, 2015.
