EPA Region 8 Wetland Program Capacity Building Workshop

Join the conversation. Increase your knowledge of wetland capacity building. Spend a day in the field exploring monitoring and assessment techniques or touring wetland restoration and mitigation sites. Discover ways to sustain the financing of wetland programs. Network with peers. Establish new partnership opportunities. 

The conference is geared toward states and tribes in EPA's Region 8: Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming and 27 sovereign tribal nations. Other interested parties are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The diversity of speakers and topics offers something for everyone interested in building wetland program capacity, and in protecting and restoring wetlands and riparian areas. Designed to help meet the national goal of no-net loss and net gain in function and acreage, the workshop focuses on integrating EPA's 4 Core Elements of an Effective State and Tribal Wetland Program.

Prior to the workshop sessions, all day field trips on Tuesday, September 21st, explore wetland monitoring and assessment techniques and wetland restoration and in western wetland systems.

Plenary guest speakers on Wednesday, September 22nd include:

  • Dave Evans from US EPA Headquarters and Karen Reed from US EPA Region 8, addressing national and state wetland issues and programs.
  • Meg Gaffney-Smith from US Army Coprs of Engineers, discussing national perspectives, best practices and partnering opportunities.
  • Jeanne Christie with the Association of State Wetland managers, speaking about resources for wetland programs and providing examples of progressive wetland programs around the nation.

Workshop sessions on September 22nd and 23rd focus on:

  • Wetland and Watershed Restoration Plans
  • Monitoring and Assessment for Decision Making
  • Water Quality Standards for Wetlands and Other Wetland Regulations/Ordinances

On Friday September 24th, an all day Sustainable Financing Workshop is provided by the University of North Carolina's Environmental Finance Center.  Or, a half-day session on Ground Water Dependent Ecosystems is offered by the Montana Natural Heritage Program.
