Watershed Protection Section: Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Program

The Watershed Management Section (total maximum daily load (TMDL) program) identifies sources of pollution to streams, rivers, and lakes within Montana and determines how much pollution those waters can sustain and still fully support our needs. We then write plans that outline how to reduce pollution to those waters and can assist local communities with finding solutions to restore and maintain clean water. DEQ’s goal is for all of Montana’s waters to be healthy enough to fully support fish and other aquatic life, to provide clean drinking water for people and livestock, and to allow for swimming and fishing.
