Montana recycles 15% of the solid waste generated annually. Montana recently updated and revised the Integrated Waste Management Plan. The plan provides recommendations for strategies to increase recycling, and sets new targets for recycling and composting: by 2015, recycling and composting should divert 22% of solid waste from landfills.
Recycling is a challenge in Montana due to our low population scattered over a large geographic area, and our lack of proximity to the processors (industry) that use the recyclables as raw materials in their operations.
Meeting Montana's new waste reduction target of 22% by 2015 will require meeting this challenge head on and encouraging every citizen to recycle as many different materials as possible. DEQ staff continues to work with industry and businesses across Montana to develop markets that can sustain and expand recycling programs across the state.
Stay up with the latest news on recycling and pollution prevention by receiving occasional emails from DEQ staff regarding new developments.
