Public meeting scheduled June 6 on Harmful Algal Blooms in Helena Valley reservoirs
HELENA – Helena Valley residents will have an opportunity to learn about the risks of Harmful Algal Blooms – including how to participate in citizen monitoring – at a public meeting June 6 at the Tri-Lake Volunteer Fire Department Station near Lake Helena.
Harmful Algal Blooms, or “HABs,” are caused by blue-green algae that occur naturally in Montana’s freshwater ecosystems. Under certain conditions, blue-green algae can proliferate to hazardous levels, producing toxins that can damage the skin, liver and nervous system of people, pets and livestock.
The theme of the evening is “What is the state doing (and what can YOU do) about HABs?” Staff with the Montana HAB Project partners – the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the Montana Department of Public Health & Human Services – will report on:
- HABs and health risks.
- The Montana HAB Program, including citizen reports and monitoring.
- A HAB-detection test strip demonstration.
- Developing nutrient criteria for Canyon Ferry Reservoir.
