Public meeting scheduled for abandoned mine cleanup project near Roundup

HELENA – The Montana Department of Environmental Quality is taking public comment on the Environmental Assessment for the Jeffries No. 18 Mine Tipple Reclamation and Musselshell River Restoration Project near Roundup, Mont.

DEQ will hold an open house and give a presentation on this and other abandoned mine projects in the area on June 28 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Ambulance Barn, 704 1st Street in Roundup.

The DEQ abandoned mine lands program staff, along with representatives from Musselshell County, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks and Department of Natural Resources and Conservation will be available to answer questions. DEQ will conduct a short presentation at 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of the Environmental Assessment is to document the potential environmental impacts that could result from the proposed Jeffries No. 18 Mine Tipple Reclamation Project. The restoration project is being conducted to limit the flooding impacts to the City of Roundup. It includes excavation and disposal of approximately 3,700 cubic yards of waste material from the road prism and railroad grade in and next to the Musselshell River, removal of the tipple foundation, and restoration of the Musselshell River to its approximate pre-mining condition.

The Draft Environmental Assessment is available online at http://deq.mt.gov/Portals/112/Land/AbandonedMines/documents/EAs/Jeffries%20Mine%20Tipple_EA_Draft.pdf?ver=2018-06-12-143518-803 and in hard copy at the Musselshell County Office, 506 Main Street and the Roundup School-Community Library at 601 6th Ave. West in Roundup.
