DEQ to Host Public Meeting Oct. 24 on Black Pine Mine Cleanup Project
HELENA – The Montana Department of Environmental Quality will host a public meeting on the Black Pine Mine site cleanup on Tuesday, October 24, from 7-9 pm at the Granite County Museum. Status updates will be given by project officials, followed by a question-and-answer session.
The project to clean up historical waste at the former Black Pine Mine is expected to be completed by the end of the 2018 construction season, with monitoring and maintenance continuing in 2019 and beyond.
Located 12 miles northwest of Philipsburg, the site was contaminated with historical mine waste containing elevated levels of heavy metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium, antimony and manganese. Cleanup construction work began in 2015, and approximately 400,000 cubic yards of contaminated tailings and waste rock have since been safely moved to a repository on the mine site. The repository is on private property held by the Montana Environmental Trust Group – the trustee appointed to manage the Black Pine cleanup and funds as a result of the 2009 ASARCO bankruptcy settlement. The goal of the project is to protect human health and the environment and to clean and restore the floodplain of the South Fork of Lower Willow Creek, an irrigation source and popular fishery.
