DEQ to Host Informational Public Meeting on Final Red Lodge Subsidence Report

Helena – The Montana Department of Environmental Quality Abandoned Mine Lands Program will hold an informational public meeting on the status of the mine subsidence investigation that occurred in Red Lodge over the past two years.

The public is encouraged to attend the meeting and will have the opportunity to ask questions. The meeting is Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. at 224 North Broadway Avenue in the Carbon County Historical Society Building in Red Lodge.

DEQ AML will present the findings of the 2014 subsidence investigation and will include the findings of the core drilling program as well as the ongoing survey monitoring program. Samples of core recovered from the drilling will be on display as well as maps and illustrations.

The investigation began in 2011 after several property owners in Red Lodge expressed concern about the possible effects of subsidence in the historic mines beneath the town on their homes. DEQ AML, in coordination with its engineer for the project, Pioneer Technical Services, conducted a two phase investigation to identify any potential issues related to past mining. The investigation included surface monitoring and core drilling that targeted the underground mine workings.
