DEQ seeks public input on expansion request for talc mine southeast of Dillon
HELENA – The Montana Department of Environmental Quality will hold a public scoping meeting in Dillon, Thursday, May 16, to seek public comment on a proposed permit amendment that would expand the Regal Mine, an open-pit talc mining operation. A public comment period on the proposed expansion begins today, May 2, and ends Monday, June 3, 2019.
Located on private land 11 miles southeast of Dillon, the Regal Mine has been in operation since 1972. Barretts Minerals, Inc., currently mines talc ore at the site, which encompasses 243 acres, with approximately 162 acres of disturbance, including a 36-acre mine pit. The proposed amendment to the operating permit would provide an additional six years in the expected life of the mine.
DEQ is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement under the Montana Environmental Policy Act that will analyze the potential impacts of the proposed permit amendment. This EIS also could serve as the MEPA review for other potential permits that may be issued by DEQ.
The first phase in preparing an EIS is to conduct “scoping” to determine the breadth of the EIS. DEQ is asking the public for comments to help identify issues that are likely to involve significant impacts and possible alternatives to be considered in the EIS.
Comments may be submitted to DEQ in writing or given at the open house and public scoping meeting Thursday, May 16, from 5-8 p.m., at the Beaverhead County High School Gym in Dillon.
The permit application is available for the public review at DEQ’s main office in Helena, 1520 E. 6th Ave. The application also may be viewed at: deq.mt.gov/Land/hardrock
All comments must be submitted by Monday, June 3, 2019. Comments may be emailed to: BarrettsEIS@mt.gov
