DEQ and OSMRE seek public comment on Rosebud Mine expansion
HELENA –The State of Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement will host a public meeting in Colstrip, Montana, on Feb. 13, 2018, to provide information and solicit comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for Western Energy Company’s proposed new permit area. The area is known as Area F and is adjacent to the existing Rosebud Mine.
The proposed project is in Rosebud and Treasure Counties about 12 miles west of Colstrip, Montana. The Draft EIS analyzes in detail the proposed project and several alternatives.
The Draft EIS is available on DEQ’s web page (http://deq.mt.gov/Public/eis) or on OSMRE’s webpage (https://www.wrcc.osmre.gov/initiatives/westernEnergy.shtm). The document will also be available to view at the DEQ Headquarters, the OSMRE Western Region Office, the Bureau of Land Management Miles City Field Office, the BLM State Office, and the Rosebud County Library.
A public meeting will be held on February 13, 2018, to allow the public to ask resource specialists questions and submit comments on the Draft EIS. The meeting will be held at the Colstrip High School Auditorium located at 5000 Pine Butte Drive in Colstrip from 3 pm to 7 pm. The meeting will be conducted in an open house style format and will include informational displays and areas where attendees may record and submit written comments. At 5 pm, DEQ and OSMRE staff will explain the EIS public involvement process and provide a brief description of the proposed project. Following this introduction, attendees will have the opportunity to provide oral testimony until 6:15 pm. Oral testimony will be limited to three minutes per person. A transcriber will record the oral comments for the project record. Interpreters will be available, upon request.
