DEQ and BLM seek public comment for mine amendment

HELENA– The Department of Environmental Quality and The Bureau of Land Management are seeking public comment on a Draft Environmental Assessment analyzing potential environmental impacts from a proposed underground mine project at the Golden Sunlight Mine. The Golden Sunlight Mine is located approximately five miles northeast of Whitehall in Jefferson County.

The project, an amendment to their current operating permit, would allow Golden Sunlight to conduct underground mining north of the Mineral Hill Pit and extend mine life by up to three years.  Golden Sunlight would construct three adits, creating 2.5 acres of new disturbance.  Overall, an additional 80 acres north of the current permit boundary would be added to the existing permit boundary to cover the underground workings and road system.  Approximately 1.3 million tons of ore would be produced along with 0.3 million tons of waste rock. More information about the proposed amendment and plan of operations is available online at :http://deq.mt.gov/Portals/112/Land/Hardrock/Active%20Amendments/Golden%20Sunlight%20016/00065_2017_12_07_CompleteAmend016.pdf

DEQ and BLM have jointly prepared the Draft EA which discloses potential impacts on area resources, including land use, recreation, soils, vegetation, hydrology and wildlife resources. The Draft EA is available online at: http://deq.mt.gov/Public/ea

DEQ and BLM will accept comments on the Draft EA until September 4, 2018. Comments can be submitted via the DEQ comment portal at: http://svc.mt.gov/deq/publiccomment/ Comments can also be mailed to Jen Lane, Department of Environmental Quality, P.O. Box 200901, Helena MT 59620-0901. DEQ and BLM will analyze and respond to substantive comments in the Final EA.
