Asbestos Advisory Group Makes Recommendations to DEQ
HELENA – The 2015 Legislature passed House Bill 434 directing the Department of Environmental Quality to convene an Asbestos Advisory Group to advise the agency on matters relating to asbestos regulation.
The AAG met monthly and recently submitted recommendations to DEQ Director Tom Livers for shaping current and future Asbestos Control Program business plans, business processes, and rule changes.
The recommendations encourage DEQ to:
- increase its effort to inform stakeholders on regulations and compliance;
- review and if necessary revise regulatory definitions;
- improve asbestos awareness at landfills;
- provide for the registration of inspections;
- provide for online permitting;
- provide for an asbestos inspection checkbox system;
- incentivize multiple asbestos accreditations;
- provide a process to continue work upon discovery of asbestos;
- and to increase asbestos compliance.
“The recommendations reflect achievable, strategic goals that provide the agency with program direction and priority,” Livers said. “With that understanding, I have directed staff to incorporate all nine of these recommendations into current and future ACP business plans to ensure the program implements them in the spirit and intent that they were developed.”
The AAG was comprised of 13 members representing diverse backgrounds and served a term ending on Dec. 31, 2016. DEQ will rely on continued stakeholder dialogue and coordination with other entities to implement the recommendations.
