Federal Facilities and Petroleum Terminals

Federal Facilities

The Federal Facilities portion of this section oversees the investigation and cleanup of petroleum and hazardous substance releases at federally-owned facilities within the state.

Petroleum Terminals

The Federal Facilities and Brownfields section provides regulatory compliance oversight and technical assistance for petroleum releases at Montana's petroleum distribution terminals. Petroleum distribution terminals store large quantities of refined petroleum products and may have storage tanks with capacities ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of gallons. Montana's petroleum terminals are located in Bozeman, Great Falls, Helena, and Missoula and are owned and operated by Phillips 66 Company and ExxonMobil Corporation. Each terminal is supplied by the Yellowstone Pipeline Company, a joint venture between Phillips 66 and ExxonMobil Oil Corporation. Refined petroleum products are distributed from each terminal location to retail service facilities throughout Montana. Petroleum releases at Montana petroleum terminals are statutorily ineligible for reimbursement from Montana's Petroleum Tank Release Compensation Fund.
