HISTORIC CONTEXT

The Lone Mountain district is located east of the Missouri River between Toston and Townsend on the western slope of the Big Belt Mountains. A few lode mines shipped ore with values in gold, silver and copper, but district production generally has been unimportant, and none was reported after 1916. Forming the northern border of the AMRB (1994) district is Deep Creek, a tributary of the Missouri. Miners worked placer claims intermittently along the creek during the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries. The production was only minor amounting to tens of ounces annually. The Deep Creek area last recorded production in 1913 and 1914 (Lyden 1948; Sahinen 1935).

BOUNDARIES OF THE DISTRICT

Sahinen (1935), the only source on the Lone Mountain district, gives no district boundaries. The placer mining activity along the Deep Creek drainage was in the higher elevations, around the junction of Cedar Bar Creek (Sahinen 1935; Lyden 1948). Figure 1 shows the Lone Mountain district as defined by the AMRB (1994).

HISTORIES OF SELECTED MINES

There is no information available on individual mines in the Lone Mountain district or the Deep Creek placer mines.
