Native Americans occupied the Little Bitterroot River Valley and enjoyed its healing hot springs for centuries. The first development occurred in 1855 when an 80-acre area around the hot springs was set aside as a government reserve. In 1910, the land surrounding the springs became the town of Hot Springs, located within the Flathead Indian Reservation.

There are now several privately owned facilities that offer indoor bathing and hot tubs, including the Symes Hotel, the Hot Springs Spa, and Wild Horse Hot Springs.

The historic Symes Hot Springs Hotel has been in operation since 1928 and is known for its healing waters. One of the last remaining grand resort hotels, the Symes is a virtual time capsule containing vintage furnishings and Spanish style architecture. The Hotel has new paint and carpeting and hot and cold outdoor pools; open year round. The resort also features a Jacuzzi suite and espresso stand, hair salon, gifts, antiques, vintage clothing, massage, a new jetted tub room, restaurant (beer and wine) and live music on weekends. Other facilities include a new event hall, sun room for meetings, musical events in the main lobby and a kitchen for group retreats. With over 22,000 feet of facility, 32 rooms, six apartments and eight cabins, the resort can accommodate weddings, reunions, and group meetings. The resort can be be reached at 406-741-2361, toll free at 888-305-3106, or by email.
