Tax Credit and Incentives

New homes are eligible for a conservation  tax credit of 25% of the extra cost to go beyond the energy code, with a maximum credit of $500 per person and $!,000 per couple available. ENERGY STAR certified homes receive a $500 Montana Tax credit or $1,000 for a couple if the extra costs above code are documented.

All new homes built in Montana must meet the 2003 International Energy Conservation Code with Montana amendments. For more detailed and specific energy code information go to the Energy Code.

A federal  tax credit of  $2000 is available to builders for new houses that are 50% more efficient than the 2004 International Energy Conservation  Code Supplement. Eligible homes must show savings using software that has been approved by the US Department of Energy and third – party inspectors must certify the home meets program guidelines.
