Introduction

Grizzly bear and cub

Montana’s diverse wildlife is rated among our most cherished resources.

Montana is home to spectacular wildlife species such as elk and grizzlies. But the state is also home to lesser known and rarely seen species such as the diminutive prairie spadefoot toad, the greater short-horned lizard, and the pygmy rabbit. As part of a nation-wide initiative, Montana recently identified its wildlife species “in greatest need of conservation.” Sixty species were identified. Climate change may bear most significantly on these and certain other species.
