Climate Change & Transportation
Introduction
Historically, Montana’s various forms of transportation have proven both a blessing and a curse. Transportation opened the state to development, but has done so at a certain cost. Today, much of that cost comes in the form of greenhouse gas emissions, mostly carbon dioxide. The transportation sector in Montana emits more than 7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere annually. That’s about 20 percent of the state’s gross greenhouse gas emissions.
