2017 Smoke Management Permits

The state of Montana issues permits to burners who are classified as major open burners. A major open burner is any person, agency, institution, business, or industry conducting any open burning that will emit more than 500 tons per calendar year of carbon monoxide or 50 tons per calendar year of any other pollutant regulated, except hydrocarbons (Administrative Rules of Montana, Chapter 17.8, Subchapter 6, rule 17.8.610)
